The most ancient of hamlets nestling at the foot of mount Muggio, surrounded by dramatic scenery and its famous gorge, it holds a delightful promenade perfect for a daytime or evening stroll
The charming village of Bellanno is situated at the foot of Mount Muggio and the river Pioverna on the eastern shores of Lake Como. It offers a stunning historic centre full of ancient walkways, 17th century buildings and baroque courts as well as beautiful lakeside walks. Lesser know than some of the surrounding resorts it is much less crowded, even in high season, perfect for those wanting to get away from it all.
What to do
Walk along the lakefront, arrive at the little square of the port and enter the old town centre where you can admire the church of Santi Nazzaro e Celsio of the third century, with a nice rose window and frescos from the Lombard school. From the old town centre go up until you find the spot where the Pioverna stream forms the Orrido, a gorge dug in the rocks, formed more than 15 million years ago and in the past used to exploit to iron. Today it can be visited passing through narrow hanging passages. At the beginning of the Orrido there is a little tower on four floors, called the "Casa Del Diavolo" (the devil's house) because of all the mythological paintings decorated on the last floor and of all the stories that described it as a place of satanic rites.
Enjoy the lovely local scenery by talking a walk along the lakefront path and even stopping to enjoy one of the surrounding pebble beaches. Lezzeno is three kilometres away from the town, where you can visit the Santuario della Madonna delle Lacrime. This sanctuary was built between the 17th and the 18th century, in a place where the Virgin Mary was said to have cried tears of blood and has strong connections with anti Lutheran movement.
What to eat
Crotto di Biosio is situated just outside the village and offers
spectacular views over the lake from its terrace as well as
reasonably priced food. Enjoy lakeside meals and snacks at
Lido di Bellano before enjoying a dip in their lido or relax
by the lake. For tasty pizzas head to Pizzeria Victoria Grill in the town square.
