Situated on the southern edge of Lake Como is a lively historic city with the same name. If you're looking for the buzz of real Italy this could be the place for you. The main city and administrative capital of the area, Como, with its fascinating historical centre, bustling streets and lively waterfront deserves to be more than just a stop off point.

What to do

Head for the historic centre, the centro strico, and Como's charms become apparent. Spend an afternoon exploring the bustling lanes and squares of the walled medieval centre. Within the old town you will find The Duomo, The Cathederal, in the magnificent setting of Piazza Duomo. This imposing church is recognised as one of the most important religious buildings of northern Italy.

The Basilica di San Fedele is a popular must see. The original church on the site dates from the sixth century with the current structure dating from the eleventh and twelfth centuries. A popular craft and antiques market fills the piazza in front of the basilica on a Saturday.

Take a boat trip from Como to one of the surrounding towns such as Bellagio or Bellano from one of the many boat companies. The funicular railway that links Como with the village of Brunate is well worth a trip. Dating from 1894 this railway offers stunning views of rural Como, the surrounding areas and lakes on it's 10 minute journey. Once at the top enjoy the breathtaking views while enjoying a drink in the local bars.

What to eat

A city of Como's size offers no shortage of dining options. La Colombetta, situated in the heart of Como, is one of it's most renowned restaurants, with it's cozy rustic atmosphere and recipes passed down through generations. For Michelin starred dining try Theoria - Ristorante I Tigli in Theoria, an unforgettable experience. For waterfront dining try La vita e Bella, for excellent and reasonably priced food.

How to get there

The most convenient airports are Milan Malpensa and Milan Linate. From Malpensa you can buy a through ticket to Como Nord Lago station. The trains run every half-hour and the journey takes around an hour.
