This pretty old town is encapsulated by the surrounding mountains with a waterfront with breathtaking alpine views from its promenade.
Nestled on the edge of Lake Como and surrounded by dramatic mountain scenery, Lecco is in a truly breathtaking setting. Situated at the southern edge of the lake this thriving city boasts a fascinating historical centre and rich history as well as charming lakefront piazzas. All of this set against the beautiful backdrop of the towering Dolomites.
What to do
A stroll along the waterfront promenade allows you take take in the stunning setting of this city. Sitauted on the waterfront you will also find the famous town bell tower and the Piazza XX Settembre and Piazza Zermenati offering a good selection of cafes for that all important coffee break.
Bridge Azzone Visconti, also called Old Bridge, built between 1336 and 1338, joins together the town, Valsassina and the eastern shore with Milan Dukedom. The bridge was built in the point where the lake flows into the Adda's river. The 18th century Basilica of San Nicolò is on the northern border of the historical centre, on the ruins of the old walls of the town, This interesting building was redesigned and enlarged, by Giuseppe Bovara in 1830 and the remains of the ancient walls are still visible.
For lovers of art and history Villa Manzoni is worth a visit. This elegant residence belonged to the Manzoni family between 1710 and 1818 and now houses many antiques and original furnishings of the era.
What to eat
To enjoy freshwater fish whilst taking in the view head to one of the many lakeside restaurants. For Michelin starred dining head to Al Porticciolo 84, a tiny little restaurant off the beaten track. Società Canottieri Leccooffers by far the best view of the lake and one of the most relaxing places for a meal. Bar Centrale is a great place to soak up the local ambience while enjoying a drink.
How to get there
The closest airports to Lecco are those of Bergamo Orio al Serio and Milano Linate, both around 40-50 minutes from Lecco by road or rail.
