Situated around its famous fortress, this charming town has a wealth of history to explore but remains a pretty spot for eating, shopping and watching the lakeland world go by
Situated on the southern end of Lake Garda is the historical fort town of Peschiera del Garda. This fascinating town is cross-crossed by canals with its impressive fortified centre sitting on an island in their midst. This once military defence is now home to bustling streets lined with shops, restaurants and cafes. Its situation at the southernmost point of the Lake offers lovely views of mountains, the lake, and river. Its well-connected location makes it the perfect base for exploring the lake, surrounding areas and nearby theme parks.
What to do
Literally surrounded by water, Peschiera is the perfect place to enjoy the many watersports on offer. There are several companies hiring pedalos, motorboats, sailing boats, kits surfs and stand up paddleboards. For those looking for a more relaxing day on the water, enjoy a fishing trip or lake cruise.
Hire a bike to explore the 42km of cycle tracks that start from the city, winding through cyresses, olive groves and antique mills. Another path starting from the town takes in the Mincio Natural Park, along the homonymous river.
For a relaxing afternoon head to Bracco Baldo Beach. Situated between Peschiera and Sirmione this large pebble beach offers sun loungers and parasols as well as several nearby bars offering cold drinks, ice creams and snacks.
Back in town spend an afternoon exploring the historical walls, local museums and churches. For history lovers take in the small but interesting Roman ruins located in the centre of town.
Just south of the town centre is the Santuario della Madonna del Frassino, a particularly peaceful and picturesque church offering beautiful frescoes and nativity scenes. A big draw for many visitors to Peschiera, are the surrounding theme parks. Take your pick from Gardaland, Italy's first and most impressive theme park, as well as Movieland Park, or the waterparks of Caneva, Picoverde and Cavour.
