Fano - a lovely beach town on the Adriatic coast
The ancient Roman seaside town of Fano lies on the Adriatic coast, 12km south of Pesaro. This fascinating resort really does offer something for everyone. Beach lovers can enjoy its miles of wide sandy beaches, lined with parasols and loungers, waterfront restaurants and bars. But head further into town and you will find a buzzing historical centre packed with piazzas and palaces, just waiting to be explored.
What to do
Starting in the historic town, enter through the impressive Arco di Augusto. This impressive Roman gate lies at the entrance to this walled town and leads on to the streets beyond. Grab a gelato from the shop situated at the entrance. Looking back through the gate, take in the impressive views of the Adriatic sea framed through this ancient structure.
Stop off at Fano cathedral. Dating back to the 10th century the cathedral has a typical Romanesque style façade whilst the interior is constructed of many massive pillars and houses some notable sculptures.
Further in town head to Piazza September. A picturesque square full of people and atmosphere with a fountain at its centre. Grab a seat in one of the surrounding bars and restaurants and watch the world go by.
For beach lovers head to one of Fano's famous beaches. To the south lies the Spiaggia Sassonia, a long stretch of pebbly beach with a wide promenade. The north lies Spiaggia Lido, a wide beach with golden sand and warm shallow waters, perfect for children. It is well equipped with sun loungers, umbrellas and play areas. This beach is particularly popular in the evening thanks to its long promenade lined with bars and restaurants. Between the two beaches lies a small fishing harbour.
On the waterfront north of faro you will find a 12km bicycle lane that stretches all the way to Pesaro.
Where to eat

For excellent, great value pizzas head to Pizzeria del Corso. Situated in the old town this popular pizzeria uses the freshest ingredients and interesting taste combinations. Grab by the pizza or slice and enjoy to take away or on one of the small tables located outside.
