Alberobello, situated in the heart of the Valle d'Itria district, is a magical UNESCO World Heritage site which is becoming an important tourist attraction for it's unusual buildings of trulli, the characteristic white-washed conical-roofed houses of the area.
The town began as a village constructed by the area's ruling family in the late 18th century to house the farmers who worked on the agricultural lands, with endless fields of almond groves and olive trees.
The Trulli, made from local limestone, are composed of cone shaped alcoves that form the rooms which are seperated by drapes. The shape and structure of the Trullis provide heat during the winter and the thick stone walls keep them cool during the summer. The peaks of the rooftops provide many pictureque images the area is reknowned for. Browse our Trulli collection here
Around the main tourist area of Rione Monti, which sits on a slope facing the modern town centre, there are many little bars and snack-shops. There are also several restaurants and pizzerias, some in trulli and at least one with an outside terrace. Down on the main street if you would like a good sit-down meal, there are two restaurants close together in the town centre which have normal prices and with excellent food.
The second trulli district is called Aia Piccola and is completely different to Rione Monti and less visited by tourists. It is still a residential area, with quiet lanes lined with little inhabited trulli.
Alberobello is in the heart of the tourist region, not far from the baroque town of Martina Franca and within easy reach of Trani, Locorotondo and Ostuni. It is easily connected to both Brindisi and Bari airport by car, as well as some fairly decent public transport.
We highly recommend staying in a Trulli in Puglia and in particular Alberobello is definately worth ticking off the bucket list.
