Castellana Grotte town is not to be confused with the caves called "Grotte di Castellana" which are the main attraction here.

Much of the town is modern, it has an old city center with churches and palaces. There's plenty of shops, restaurants and cafes in the tight grid of streets that make up its center and a walk around town is worthwhile before or after you've visited the famous caverns.

The town itself has medieval root and the caves were not found until 1938 and since then the focus has mainly been on tourism, however there is still a strong agricultural tradition here.

The Caves

One of the most important attractions in Puglia, located at the entrance to the Itria valley and just a few km from Alberobello, Cisternino and Polignano a Mare. Since their opening they have been seen by over 15 million visitors. The 3km guided tour explores caves upto 60 meters deep, showing off some amazing rock formations and wonderful array of colours and shapes.

The Caves of Castellana are classed as one of the most amazing natural wonders of the world and defiantely worth a visit. The spectacular caverns are the reason thousands of people come to this part of Puglia every year.
