This stunning geological formation is one of the marvels of Italy and remarkably still much of it to be discovered, the sun shines through its openings it creates a truly magical effect.
Castellana Grotte town is not to be confused with the caves called "Grotte di Castellana" which are the main attraction here.
Much of the town is modern, it has an old city center with churches and palaces. There's plenty of shops, restaurants and cafes in the tight grid of streets that make up its center and a walk around town is worthwhile before or after you've visited the famous caverns.
The town itself has medieval root and the caves were not found until 1938 and since then the focus has mainly been on tourism, however there is still a strong agricultural tradition here.
