What is a Trullo?
A trullo (plural, trulli) is a traditional Apulian dry stone hut with a conical roof. Their style of construction is specific to the Itria Valley, in the Murgia area of the southern region of Puglia.
In the town of Alberobello, whole districts contain dense concentrations of trulli is one of Puglia's two UNESCO World Heritage Sites and is certainly worth a visit. They are dotted around the countryside surrounding Locorotondo, Martina Franca, Ceglie Messapica, Cisternino and Ostuni
Trulli generally were constructed as temporary field shelters and storehouses or, as permanent dwellings by small proprietors or agricultural labourers. Folklore suggests this was to be easily be dismatled and rebuilt whenever the tax authorities were around. Though built without cement, their thick white-painted stone walls ensured coolness in the summer and warmth in the winter.
