This picture-postcard hilltop city with its jaw-dropping scenery and typical Silician Baroque architecture is a perfect place for an evening passeggiata through its pretty streets
Ragusa, in south eastern Sicily is one of the islands most picturesque towns. Rebuilt after the earthquake of 1693 along with its neighbours Noto, Modica and Scicli all of which form the UNESCO Heritage site of Val di Noto. The rebuild split opinion and resulted in the wealthy nobles building on the higher ground called Superiore and the original site now known as Ibla.
The lower part draws the crowds as the sight of the jumble of houses, churches and civic palazzi piled on top of each other, clinging to the walls of the gorge, is really quite breathtaking. The town is charming and full of life, with its proud residents keeping it thriving in restaurants, cafes and shops. The beautiful views are the highlight of your visit through this divine city.
Comiso airport is only 10 miles away but most come through Catania Airport being the nearest international. There are direct buses between Catania Airport and Ragusa, a journey which takes just one hour and forty-five minutes.
