Assisi - the hometown of the Patron of St.Francis
A stunning picturesque UNESCO World Hertiage site set on the slopes of Mount Subicao in Umbria. Assisi is very peaceful place thanks to the being the hometown of St Francis, a patron for peace and virtue.
With spectacular views of the plains below, many fine restaurants and artisan shops makes Assisi a beautiful town for exploring and wandering. Filled with pilgrims and tourists by day which can become crowded during peak season but after the masses leave the town becomes a magical romantic and peaceful setting for a relaxing evening.
Many of the towns sights are related to religion, the most famous and most visited is the Basilica di San Francesco, somehow constucted within the mountain rock and therefore was damaged in the earthquake of 1997. Built to honour the saint who lies in the crypt, this grand building is the focal point for pilgrims that come from all over the world.
There are plenty of places to wine and dine, the most obvious in the main tourist areas can be expensive therefore for an alternative walk further from the Basilica di San Francesco, down narrow lanes will direct you to Assisi's centre where you can find some excellent pizzerias and cafes. In the main piazza is another church dedicated to Minerva and it's ancient columns highlight the piazza at night.
Here at Holiday Homes in Italy we highly recommend a visit to Assisi, whether staying in Umbria or a neighbouring district, you will not be disappointed. After a day lounging around the pool, drive into the town for an afternoon, take in the history and architecture, then settle down for a meal, watch the sunset accompanied by a glass (or a bottle) of the regions fine wines.
