Castiglione del Lago is a delightful village located in the southwest corner of Lake Trasimeno. The historical centre is a well preserved and has great panoramic views over the Lake.
The town's main pull is the Rocca del Leone, otherwise known as the 'Fortress of the Lion', that has withstood a number of sieges and features square towers in four of its corners. The majestic building has been the most important military settlement on the shore of Lake Trasimeno, for ages.
Here seems to be the most suitable part of the lake for active ethusiasts. With a sailing club with various offerings such as windsurfing, water skiing, canoeing but for those wishing to stay on dry land you can hire a bike and cycle on the nice path that circumnavigates the lake. In addition, there are ample tennis courts, exercise tracks, beach volley, horse riding and trekking.
The Italian Kite Association organizes an annual festival called "Coloriamo I Cieli" (Let's paint the sky) in the springtime and is one of the most important kite and hot air balloon festivals organized and attracts people from all over the world.
