This vineyard and olive grove surrounded city is captured by medieval walls and has so much charm in a wonderful setting to immerse yourself in its vibrant history and culture
A charming historical medieval town in southern Umbria surrounded by hills, vineyards and olive groves. The town has numerous monuments and buildings of fine architecture, including a Roman theatre, a cathedral, churches and most impressive of all is the imposing fortress.
The fortress of Spoleto stands proudly above the village and was used as a prison until the mid 80's until it was restored and turned back into its former glory. The historic center is great to explore, starting at the Piazza del Duomo, in the upper part of town and surrounded by many Renaissance buildings, the Cathedral and Fortress, then through the medieval streets filled with artisan shops, gelaterias and fine restaurants to sample some local produce such as truffles, porcini mushrooms, salami, sausage and other roasted meats. We recommend trying the famous Crescionda, a typical cake of Spoleto.
The venue for two major annual events, The Two Worlds Festival (Festival dei Due Mondi), which is a celebration of the arts and the world famous Spoleto Jazz Festival. These festivals have a major influence on the atmosphere of the town, creating a lively vibe with some excellent bars to sample the regional red wines of Montefalco and Sagrantino, in addition to the famous Orvieto white wine.
